Launching “Guul iyo Geed”: Harnessing the Power of Sports for Climate Action in Somalia

guul iyo geed

Mogadishu, Somalia — 22-Octoer-2026 The Somali Center for Climate Change (SCCC) is proud to announce the official launch of Guul iyo Geed Initiative (Victory and Tree), a pioneering sports-meets-climate initiative designed to mobilize athletic competition to combat environmental degradation and build climate resilience across Somalia.

Somalia is on the frontlines of global climate change, facing severe environmental challenges including deforestation, soil erosion, and severe droughts. At the same time, sports—particularly football—remain one of the most powerful, unifying passions shared by Somali youth and communities nationwide. Guul iyo Geed bridges these two worlds, turning every match, tournament, and championship into an active victory for the planet.

Grounded in Global Standards: UNFCCC Alignment

SCCC is honored to announce that the Guul iyo Geed initiative strictly aligns with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Sports for Climate Action initiative.

Through this alignment, SCCC stands as the first and only organization in Somalia to bring this prestigious global climate framework to our nation. By adhering to international principles of environmental stewardship in sports, we are setting a new standard for how athletic platforms can drive tangible ecological transformation in the Horn of Africa.

How “Guul iyo Geed” Works

Under the Guul iyo Geed model, athletic competition is directly tied to environmental restoration:

  • Legacy Groves: The winning team of every tournament and championship supported by the initiative will be awarded a legacy grove of native trees to plant in their local community.
  • Youth Engagement: We are directly involving young athletes and spectators in grassroots reforestation, environmental education, and land restoration efforts.
  • Sustainable Sporting Events: SCCC will work with local sports federations and youth clubs to introduce eco-friendly practices across tournament venues and community matches.

“By uniting the universal passion for sports with urgent environmental stewardship, we are empowering our youth to become champions both on the pitch and for our planet’s future.”
